Valor Mortis First Boss: General Lothaire Guide

The quick answer

General Lothaire is the first boss. The Chapter 1 fight is normally a scripted loss; the real rematch comes in Chapter 2. Parry the flag combos, use Fire, shoot his leg and chest weak points, then clear phase-two adds before resuming pressure.

Current through the October 28, 2026 update; combat timing reflects the October 23 hitbox and damage-window patch.

General Lothaire appears twice

General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer, is the first main boss. His Chapter 1 encounter closes Revival and is normally a scripted loss: dying is the expected story transition, not a sign that you missed a required upgrade. If you do win the prologue fight, Fextralife reports a 10,000-Catalyst consumable bonus, but the canonical fight is the Chapter 2 rematch in the Valley of Ashes.

Prepare for the rematch

Fire Transmutation is the safest pressure tool in the fight. A full Ignite interrupts his attack animation. The Pistol is equally valuable because his right leg and chest expose weak points that take damage and Stagger while replenishing bullets and Nephtoglobin.

Bring a setup that supports:

  • repeated parries without exhausting endurance;
  • quick firearm aim at the front and back of his right leg and the chest near his right arm;
  • enough mobility to disengage from the flag and shoulder-gun sequences;
  • a reliable answer to summoned soldiers, especially if your build lacks crowd damage.

Phase one: punish the recovery windows

Dodge the three consecutive shoulder-gun shots sideways, then close the distance. His overhead flag sequence can be avoided by backing away or parried three times. The horizontal flag variant asks for two rapid parries.

Do not park behind him after a combo. He can spin into a sword slash that punishes the assumed safe spot. Dodge the crouch-and-leap slam as late as possible because the attack tracks a little before impact.

A full posture break drops Lothaire to one knee and opens a critical. Keep rotating between parry pressure, Fire, and firearm weak points rather than committing to one damage source.

Phase two: clear the arena, then return to the boss

After the first health bar, Lothaire’s left hand swells and new weak points appear on his left leg and arm. The phase adds:

  • sweeping hand chains;
  • summoned soldiers and musketeers;
  • an explosive corpse throw;
  • a spike trail and a serpentine ground spike;
  • an arena-wide shockwave that must be jumped.

Kill the adds quickly so their attacks do not overlap the next boss sequence. Dodge the corpse and ground projectiles, jump the shockwave, and continue using Fire and the new weak points. When he commits to a long animation, use the free window for a critical setup rather than chasing raw damage.

Common mistakes

Mistake Better response
Treating the Chapter 1 defeat as a fail state Let the scripted loss play out; the story continues
Standing behind Lothaire for safety Expect the spin slash; leave after the combo instead
Firing only at the centre of mass Target the exposed right-leg and chest weak points
Ignoring summoned enemies Clear them before resuming boss pressure
Jumping the shockwave early Watch the ground and jump as the wave reaches you

The full boss order shows how this fight fits into the rest of the campaign. Combat timing should be checked against the post-October 23, 2026 hitbox and damage-window changes.
