Start An Unheard Farewell
An Unheard Farewell is the first side quest and begins in Chapter 2. Reach the Lantern by the carriages, one of which is toppled. The officer you need to meet is deeper along the route; the Pistol pickup also sits inside this quest area, but it is not the final choice reward.
Reach the officer
- Go straight past the carriages, turn right, and kill the Shambling Civilian.
- Take a left and sneak up on the Risen Soldier for a deathblow.
- Return to the carriages, take a left, then a right at the small lantern onto the wooden beam.
- Turn right again and kill the Risen Lancer with Fire.
- Continue straight, turn left past the fallen carriages and the body in the water, then right past the crates to a Risen Grenadier.
- Dodge the grenades, close the distance, and continue through the locked tunnel to meet the officer.
- Agree to help him.
Rest at the next Lantern and follow the wooden planks toward the third Lantern.
Recover the missing troops’ proof
Use the left elevator and burn the yellow wall on the right with Fire. Fight the three Carrion; the missing troops are dead above them. Climb the ladder, turn right toward the crow, and continue across the bridge that will break.
Shoot the two facing orange globs, use the lever to raise the elevator, and descend. Stop at the right-hand yellow wall and burn through it. The Risen Soldier mini-boss waits beyond.
The Pistol, grenades, and patient timing work well here. Read his one-, two-, or three-hit strings before committing to a counter. Take the Pure Blade Material and the Letter to all commanding officers from the red chest area.
To return, climb the ladder left of the chest, drop straight ahead, continue right, and raise the ladder before the orange globe. Bring the letter back to the officer.
Choose what to tell him
Both choices award the Sleight of Hand Amber. The difference is the follow-up item.
| Choice | Immediate result | Reward after resting and returning |
|---|---|---|
| Tell the truth | The officer denies the news | Return to the wagon and collect an Epic Catalyst Clot worth 700 Catalysts |
| Lie and give him good news | He accepts the report | Return to the cave where you fought the Risen Soldier mini-boss and collect his skull for Remnant’s Return, which prevents Catalyst loss on death |
Which choice is better?
Remnant’s Return protects your Catalyst pool when you die, making it the stronger long-term convenience if you expect repeated boss attempts. The Epic Catalyst Clot is a one-time 700-Catalyst payout. Neither outcome changes the Amber reward.
Rest at the nearby Lantern before returning for the follow-up so the world state and reward location update correctly.
Relation to the Pistol
The Pistol location is found during this quest’s wagon route, but the firearm is not the truth-or-lie reward. If you are following this page only for the weapon, use the dedicated Pistol guide to avoid confusing the detached wagon pickup with the officer hand-in.
