Start with the combat loop
Valor Mortis rewards precise defence more than passive guarding. Treat parry as your default answer to an ordinary incoming attack: press guard at the last moment before impact. A successful parry avoids the health and endurance cost of a normal block and builds the enemy’s posture faster than a regular hit. When the posture bar breaks, take the critical.
Red-aura attacks are the exception. They are unblockable and cannot be parried, so dodge them instead. If you do block and take chip damage, attack back quickly to recover the highlighted portion of health.
Three habits keep the loop manageable:
- Watch the weapon or limb, not a generic rhythm. Several enemies pause inside a chain to disguise the next hit.
- Aim at exposed pustules, heads, shields, and equipment. The Pistol is your safest weak-point tool, while the Rapier gives you precise melee pokes.
- Break useful enemy options before they begin. Shooting a Risen Grenadier’s bomb bag is more valuable than trading damage with the grenade itself.
The parry timing guide covers the input and posture rules in more detail.
Read Lanterns as route markers
A Lantern saves progress, restores health and Nephtoglobin, respawns ordinary enemies, and gives you a place to spend Catalysts on levels and fast travel. Lit Lanterns also tend to sit on the critical route. When a side branch appears, expect loot, a quest, or a return path rather than the main chapter exit.
This makes exploration a decision rather than a completion chore:
- Reach and light the next Lantern when you are low on resources.
- Sweep nearby branches while the area is already loaded in your head.
- Mark obstacles that need a later traversal tool or Transmutation and return after the relevant chapter.
Backtracking is part of the structure. Ambers, Oathbound Guardsmen, poison paths, and optional materials frequently sit behind abilities you do not own on the first pass. See Oathbound locations and poison crossings for the main late-game revisits.
Spend Catalysts and materials carefully
Catalysts are the common progression currency spent at Lanterns. Skill points can be reset for Catalysts, but the rare materials used to upgrade a weapon cannot be refunded. That distinction matters early: do not exhaust scarce weapon materials on the starting Saber and Pistol before Chapter 3 introduces the Rapier and Blunderbuss.
Consumables are permanent when used. Save Vials, Whetstones, grenades, and Pistol Rounds for bosses, difficult groups, or cleanup rather than routine walking.
For upgrade choices, start with the Amber guide and the weapon comparison rather than spreading rare resources across every option.
Change tools when the problem changes
Ambers only work while equipped, and weapon upgrades cannot be refunded, so a single setup is not the answer to every encounter. Use the dedicated Amber guide and weapon comparison before committing rare resources or assuming one loadout carries the whole campaign.
Expect the current build to differ from older videos
The October 23, 2026 patch adjusted enemy hitboxes and damage windows. The October 28 Halloween update added new Rapier and Saber critical attacks, weapon skins, and fixes. Use older timing footage as a starting point, not a frame-perfect guarantee, and re-test a parry if the visual contact no longer matches the result.
The chapter walkthrough is the next stop once the basic loop feels stable.
