Poison fog is a traversal gate
Green poison fog and other infestation hazards are gated traversal, not a damage race. The required tool is the Shield Transmutation, obtained through late-game main progression.
Activate and hold Shield while walking through the green fog. It consumes Nephtoglobin but prevents poison buildup. Releasing the barrier inside the hazard exposes you again, so maintain it until you reach clean ground.
When do you get Shield?
Published guides label the acquisition differently:
- IGN: near the very end of the University, with Shield already usable at the start of Chapter 9.
- PowerPyx: Chapter 8.
- Method: Chapter 10 at the Castle.
The reliable description is the University/Castle sequence late in the campaign. If the game still blocks your poison route, continue that progression rather than searching for a hidden antidote. The Emissary guide shows how this uncertainty affects one specific quest.
What Shield is used for
Holding Shield does more than cross fog:
- it blocks status effects from infestation hazards;
- it helps against hard-hitting late-game attacks;
- its level-4 Impenetrable Defence upgrade can block unblockable attacks;
- it opens backtracking routes that were visibly gated earlier.
Because the barrier drains Nephtoglobin, clear nearby enemies before a long crossing or rest at a Lantern first. A safe poison route can become a resource problem if you enter with an empty bar and try to fight on the far side.
Places to revisit
Once Shield is available, return to the early gated areas instead of assuming the first blocked pass was optional decoration:
- Chapter 2 Emissary’s Seal fog leads to The Emissary quest and the Perfect Copy Amber.
- Chapter 8 Shamble Street fog leads toward the Oathbound Guardsman Adrien Casell.
- The Chapter 6 Oathbound route becomes easier with Shield available.
The Oathbound locations and Monster Hunt route both depend on understanding which paths were blocked on the first visit.
If the fog still hurts
Check that you are actually holding the Shield Transmutation rather than tapping it or treating it as a passive. If the barrier is active but Nephtoglobin runs out mid-crossing, return to the Lantern, restore resources, and choose a shorter route through the same hazard. This guide does not assume an unverified antidote item or a fixed safe-walking speed.
